北カリフォルニアで生まれ育ったケイト・ウルフがソロ･デビューを果たしたのは70年代中ごろで、30歳を過ぎていました。
彼女に駄作は一切なく、自宅のリヴィングルームでライブ録音されたという76年のデビュー作にあたる本作も、「突然送られてきた旧友からの手紙」のような気にさせられます。
心温まるアコギの響きにのせて、ヒューマンな歌声が……そんなケイトは生涯4度の結婚をし、歌手への夢を諦められずに29歳で子ども2人を置いて家を出た結果が本作なのだそうです。Karen Darltonにも言える様な気がしますが、波乱万丈の人生の裏返しで、動じるところがないのかもしれません。
だからこそケイトを聴いていて「感傷的」にはなりませんし、そこが彼女の最大の魅力なのです。
黙って針を落とせばそこはケイトの世界。虚無感を突き抜けた天上界のようなすがすがしい世界が広がります。
さりげなく沁み出てくるような哀しみの表現が胸を打つ女性シンガーソングライターの大傑作です。
"Legend In His Time"はグラム・パーソンズに捧げられています。
全部名曲と言ってもいい素晴らしい出来ばえ。
